Cranbrook is located in southeast BC on the west side of the Kootenay River; at its confluence with the St. Mary’s River. It is the largest urban centre in the East Kootenays and as of 2016, Cranbrook’s population was 19,259 with a census agglomeration population of 26,083

The census agglomeration encompasses the City of Kimberley, the heritage town of Fort Steele, and surrounding communities such as Moyie, Jaffray, Elko and Wardner. Cranbrook`s commercial trade area services approximately 73,000 people.

Today, major industries in Cranbrook include forestry, mining, manufacturing and tourism. Cranbrook has established itself as the trade and transportation hub of the East Kootenay.
