Montrose is one of five municipalities and two electoral areas of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary that is geographically described as the Greater Trail Area, which is situated in a region of the Province of British Columbia referred to as the West Kootenay Region.  In addition to the Village of Montrose, other municipalities in the region include the City of Trail, the City of Rossland and the Villages of Warfield and Fruitvale. Montrose is located approximately 2 km east of the City of Trail.
