Nelson is situated at the junction of provincial Highway 3A and Highway 6 on the shores of Kootenay Lake, one of the largest lakes in BC. The economy has historically been based on forestry and mining, but these days tourism, recreation, hospitality, and retail sales have mostly taken over. Due to this active economy, and mountain location with proximity to lakes and ski hills, the area has a cost of living, and housing prices, higher than most communities in the Kootenays.
