Rossland is one of five municipalities and two electoral areas of the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary that is geographically described as the Greater Trail Area. In addition to the City of Rossland, the other municipalities include the City of Trail and the Villages of Warfield, Montrose and Fruitvale. Their economies are intertwined and largely driven by the resource sector and tourism.
Three major regional employers are located in nearby Trail. Teck Trail Operations, one of the largest Lead-Zinc Smelter Complexes in the world, employs approximately 1,500 individuals. The Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital is also located in Trail. It is the largest diagnostic and acute care facility in the West Kootenay. The Kootenay Association for Science and Technology, offering business development services like coaching, expertise, training and development is located in in Rossland too. Further, Red Mountain Resort is located roughly 5 minutes to the north of Rossland by car and draws people from around the world to its three mountains: Granite, Grey, and Red.
