Sparwood and Elkford

Sparwood is located in Electoral Area A of the Regional District of East Kootenay. It is the second largest community on the Elk River with a population of roughly 4,200. The first inhabitants in the Sparwood area were First Nations, primarily the Ktunaxa, who have lived in the area for over 10,000 years. Sparwood was formed on May 12, 1966.

Today, major industries in Sparwood include forestry and mining. Although Sparwood is heavily dependent on mining, the economy is slowly becoming more diversified. That said, the mining industry remains strong in the area employing an estimated 60% of the permanent population in the Fernie/Sparwood area.

Elkford is located in Electoral Area A of the Regional District of East Kootenay. It is a community of 2,500 people on the Elk River. Elkford was incorporated in 1971.

Today, major industries in Elkford include forestry and mining. Teck Resources operates five open-pit coal mines in the Elkford area. Although heavily dependent on mining, the picturesque community is very attractive to visitors and tourists from across the country and around the world.

Outdoor recreational activities take place in both Sparwood and Elkford throughout the year.
